A Message from the Editors

Thank you for visiting the 2026 issue of Groundwork.  We are so pleased to welcome you here.

This year’s issue and the ABEABC 2026 Conference are centered on wellness.  In a chaotic world impacted by violence, discrimination and conflict, what will ground us, as educators and members of the human race?

Adult basic education as a field is described as high-school level courses for mature students, but to us the educators, it is so much more.  It is access.  It is equity.  It is compassion and empathy, social justice and social change.  As the economic and political climate around Canadian post-secondary institutions fluctuates, how do we match our values to what we can realistically do with the resources available to us?  How do we model personal health and wellness to our students when we must do more with less?

No answers here unfortunately.  But read on, for ways big and small that ABE is coping, evolving, and thriving in a space that changes students’ lives for the better every day.
